When some people hear about Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing, or EMDR, they think of only one part of the treatment model – the bilateral stimulation, or the eye movements. While this is the most commonly known part of EMDR, it is not the whole process. When you start EMDR with an EMDR-trained or EMDR-certified (i.e., they have pursued additional education and training about EMDR) clinician, the clinician goes through each step in EMDR treatment, such as assessing your situation, problem, and background, form a hypothesis, identify memories, and then do the eye movements, or bilateral stimulation. The graphic below shows each of the phases, or steps, of EMDR treatment more fully.
